Leadership and Systems Management
Introduction
With the Leadership and Systems Management outcome, concepts of ethical leadership principles used to solve human systems issues, developing strategic planning, the interpretation of a health care financial plan were looked at to reach a conceptual understanding of this area. Being able to involve oneself in the communities they serve and how organizations can be a part of that impact are what stood out to me, being able to develop leadership qualities and understand the meaning behind those factors came from working on these artifacts.
Artifact #1 - Healthy Hearts Community Event
Here we tackled issues of leadership theories, corporate ethics, strategies and principles of social and health care justice in the realm of the health care spectrum. This course involved the development of a project that I was able to lead for a community health outreach event.
In this project I was able to lead a small team to which we were able to educate the community heart health literacy as well as patient health advocacy.
Throughout the development of the project, I was able to learn about many different aspects of leadership and team dynamics. We were able to look at issues such as: creating a team climate, increasing diversity and inclusion, dealing with conflicts and obstacles, as well as ethics, values and social justice. I was able to learn about the different types of leadership and what fit best from my journey with the project as well as being able to reflect on and how to grow into a better professional.
Artifact #2 – Business Plan Proposal (Cora)
In the process of working on a business plan for a startup company we investigated different aspects that are involved with the process of developing a health care startup. Breaking down what the business would be doing (business description), market analysis, SWOT analysis to identify strengths as well as weaknesses, financial planning of startup costs, profit/loss projections, operation and implementation planning as well.
The goal for this proposal was to able to take into account all factors needed to develop the business plan for the company to be able to take off from the ground. If multiple factors were not considered it could lead to the plan having a higher chance of failure. The business plan for Cora took all these factors into consideration when I was developing the structure for the idea. Having stake holders on board to have the necessary support for the plan as well as the extremely important financial numbers were essential to the core of the plan. The learning process involved aspects of using ethical leadership and adapting to circumstances to advocated for a team culture as it is not possible to create an organization that will thrive from one individual. For me it was a learning process to come to this realization and for this proposal to work.
Artifact #3 – Eight Step Strategic Planning Process
Being able to develop a strategic plan for an existing company and how to grow a company is very important for the longevity and impact the business can have. This is even more important when it comes to healthcare organizations in that they can continue to serve the communities that they are in. An eight-step strategic planning process was used to help create a plan for a company, in this case I looked in the MinuteClinic organization and created a plan for them.
The breakdown of the company structure and how to help the company move forward was the main area that I was looking at. Then further looking into how the company operates such as their company culture, identifying areas of growth or strategic area targets. Working then on strategies to achieve these goals and action steps to take. The hardest part for me was developing the vision statement to hold the project to itself and be able to grow from the experience. Taking the strategic plan from learning about the company to developing a plan and vision is what helped me learn about how growth can sometimes be hard to come by if no plan is made or put in place for its future endeavors.
