Health Science Knowledge and Skills
Introduction
In Health Science Knowledge and Skills, we look at medical terminology, chronic disease drivers, health care delivery systems, health care provider roles, and foundational concepts of health care informatics. What trends are being established in health care, terminologies and technologies being used to propel healthcare to understand and disseminate behind the scenes work.
Artifact #1 – Classification and Terminology Systems
Understanding the work that goes into running a hospital is an ever-evolving avenue of healthcare, clinicians and caretakers do the work but that also needs to be documented. Here in this documentation, I learned the basic understanding of health care billing coding using different coding systems within EHR documentation for clinicians and post-care administration coders.
Here the coverage of the use of ICD-9 and ICD-10 international diagnosis coding systems and how electronic health record (EHR) use these codes to help with their documentation system. Also, the important use of CPT coding for procedures done for a patient during a visit as well to further have a universal language for patient care. Within the documentation system also the use of SNOMET-CT for providers whereas ICD is used for coders in post-care summary.
Artifact #2 – Health Literacy Project Proposal
Understanding patient populations within the United States is a very important aspect to take into consideration when looking at health care outcomes. One very complex area that a lot of systems and organizations look at is patient readmissions which can often be tied to in-hospital care as well as patient education. Creating awareness around health conditions and better understanding of disease processes is an extremely important task to accomplish within current health care practices.
A proposal was developed through one of my courses in Healthcare Informatics that wanted to tackle these issues through the improvement of health literacy. This is a very important and urgent issue in areas where there are poor health outcomes especially. There is lack of access to resources as well as health care in those areas and having a less costly solution could be key to creating preventative healthcare measures as well as population wellbeing for those communities.
Artifact #3 – Cybersecurity and Home Health
Adaptations to growing issues is the key issue of this paper which looks at trends in home health and the threats of increased use of information technology. Increased use of technology in healthcare has been a continuing trend over the years and now with home health taking advantage of that trend it brings along with it threats to individuals’ privacy as well as their health care.
A literature research paper looking a peer reviewed articles as well as news outlets looks at the trends as well as what is necessary to deploy technologies into peoples’ homes safely and be able to deliver better health outcomes. The goal of technology is to improve workflows and ease of access for patients to their health care and take control of the disease process. This paper looks more into the details of how to manage those issues and risk mitigation however the introduction and body break down the general overview and understanding of this ever evolving trend that will continue to grow.
